We can finally announce that Constable's 'The Cornfield' will be on display at 64 High Street, Newport, from Tuesday 6th until Sunday 11th June and open to the public to view free of charge between 9am - 5pm, as part of National Gallery's 2023 Visits programme.
Newport is one of only 5 towns selected for this touring exhibition and it's a fantastic opportunity for all Islanders to view this world famous piece of work locally.
The High Street Heritage Action Zone team have been working over the last few months to secure a suitable display location and are delighted to be collaborating with Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council in their newly converted building at 64 High Street.
Along with the Isle of Wight Council's Heritage Education Service, The Museum of Island History and Independent Arts, we have put in place a programme of coordinating events, including school visits, creative workshops, singing sessions and wellbeing gatherings.
The Museum of Island History, located at The Guildhall, is open for extended hours during this week and has a new display photos from James Dore featuring the history of Rural Island Life, which compliments The Cornfield. The museum will be open free of charge between the 6 - 10 June (10am - 1pm). There will be special activities for families at the museum on Saturday 10 June (10am - 1pm), with a photo trail and mystery objects to identify.
